In 1834, on the basis of a three-year pedagogical institute at St. Volodymyr's University in Kyiv, the training of science and geography teachers for gymnasiums and county schools began. Later, in 1859, the university began to teach science and geography teachers for real schools in 2-year pedagogical courses.
In 1870, the Society of Naturalists of Kyiv organized the Higher Courses in Natural Sciences, which were later transformed into the Higher Women's Courses, where they trained teachers of natural sciences and geography for women's gymnasiums. At the same time, the Southern Geographical Society is creating a geographical institute that trains teachers of geography and comparative ethnography. Subsequently, teachers of science and geography for higher primary and urban schools were trained by the Teachers' Institute.
In 1920, the above-mentioned educational institutions were reorganized into the Kyiv Institute of Public Education (KINO) named after MP Drahomanov, which included two faculties: school and preschool. The school faculty had two departments: humanities and natural sciences.
Since 1933, the chemical, biological and geographical departments have been opened at the institute, later reorganized into biological and chemical faculties, where outstanding scientists - professors O.G. Sokolovsky, O.M. Rusko, A.A. Zhavzharov, O.T. Dibrova, V.S. Medina, M.M. Prakhov.
In 1971, the pedagogical faculty began training teachers of biology, chemistry and geography. The Department of Natural Sciences was established as a part of it, headed by Professor F.L. Lesyk.
In 1972, the Faculty of Natural Geography was established on the basis of the Department of Natural Sciences. During the period of its existence the deans were: professors S.I. Ivchenko, Y.P. Gudz, B.K. Grishko-Bogmenko. From 1999 to 2018, the faculty was headed by Professor VP Pokas.
The development of the faculty is associated with the creation of new departments and the formation of teaching staff. In April 2004, the Faculty of Natural Geography was reorganized into the Institute of Natural Geographical Education and Ecology. The institute, in addition to eleven departments, includes the following departments: agrobiostation "Tatarka"; training and health bases, Birch, Sula.
In January 2016, the Institute was reorganized into the Faculty of Natural Geographical Education and Ecology.
Since 2018, the faculty is headed by Associate Professor Anna Turchynova. The faculty consists of seven departments. As of the 2020-2021 academic year, the faculty has 43 full-time teachers, including: 10 professors, 35 associate professors, candidates of science, 4 teachers have the title of Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine.
At the faculty 501 students receive different levels of higher education, from them: 358 - full-time, 143 - part-time. There are master's and postgraduate courses at the faculty.
Graduates of our faculty provide the educational process in secondary and higher educational institutions, work in research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine.
There are 7 student groups and 7 problem groups working at the departments of the institute. Every year, students of the faculty have significant achievements in the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiads and competitions of scientific student works. Teachers and students take an active part in organizing and conducting scientific conferences and seminars at the international and national levels.
The faculty pays considerable attention to summer internships, which students take on the basis of the scientific and health base of NPP "Synevir" (Kolochava village, Zakarpattia region), on natural and industrial sites (Kyiv), in Prykarpattia, Bukovyna and Zakarpattia .
